History
Human inhibition in Zanjan province dates back to thousands of years ago. Historical and archeological items related to different historical periods have been found in this province. Zanjan city’s foundation dates back to Sassanid Ardeshir Babkan’s as per historian, Hamdollah Mostowfi. Zanjan has had lots of ups and downs throughout history and was re-constructed during the Safavid era. Today’s city has been inhabited since Safavid times.
Geography
The province neighbors East Azarbaijan, Ardabil, and Gilan provinces to the north, West Azarbaijan, and Kordestan to the west, Hamadan to the south, and Qazvin to the east.
The province can be divided into two mountainous and plain regions. Most of the towns are located on the mountains’ outskirts and the plains surrounded in the mountainous region.
Ghezel-Ozan River and a number of other rivers flow in Zanjan province. It starts in Kordestan mountains and finally enters the Caspian sea after joining other rivers.
Climate
Zanjan province is one of the cold provinces of Iran. Despite altitude variations and the influence of weather fronts, most of its regions have semi-dry and very cold climates.
The best time for visiting this province, weather-wise, is spring and summer.
